Motion Graphics Exploration – Emotional States Series
Project type
Motion Graphics
Overview & Personal
This project began as both a personal challenge and a creative opportunity that emerged during my collaboration with Ambermind AI. While working with the team, I was encouraged to explore unconventional methods of emotional communication through visual media—a prompt that aligned perfectly with my own desire to expand into motion graphics, a field I’d long admired for its power to blend storytelling, design, and emotion through movement.
At the time, I had no formal training in motion graphics. Motivated by both internal curiosity and the external challenge, I took it upon myself to learn Adobe After Effects from scratch. I set out to create a self-initiated visual study exploring how abstract animation could evoke specific emotional states. What started as an experiment quickly evolved into a four-part animated series, each representing a distinct emotional tone: Confusion/Upset, Contentment, Anger, and Sadness/Disappointment.
The Brief
The brief—both self-imposed and shaped by Ambermind AI’s emphasis on emotional resonance—was conceptually simple but creatively ambitious: develop a series of short, abstract animations that convey distinct emotional states without relying on literal imagery, text, or dialogue. The goal was to let motion, shape, and color carry the emotional weight—pushing design into a more sensory, intuitive mode of storytelling.
Design Process, Challenges & Attention to Detail
As this was my first deep dive into After Effects, much of the process was defined by a balance between technical learning and artistic experimentation. Every emotion demanded a different animation language—unique pacing, transitions, and movement styles that would visually express complex, often subtle, feelings.
A major challenge was achieving emotional clarity through purely abstract visuals. Without the crutch of narrative or characters, every decision—from motion curves to color palettes—needed to be intentional and emotionally precise. I focused closely on rhythm, timing, and spatial dynamics to ensure each animation felt authentic to the emotion it was meant to convey.
Skills & Tools Used
Adobe After Effects for animation and visual effects
Adobe Illustrator for creating shape assets and design elements
Exploration of keyframing, easing, timing, and motion curves
Emotional storytelling through movement, rhythm, and color
Self-directed learning via tutorials, experimentation, and iteration
Strong attention to detail to ensure emotional tone matched movement
Result
The final outcome was a four-part animated series—visually minimal but emotionally rich. Each piece functions as a standalone emotional study, unified by a shared language of abstract motion. The project not only helped me develop technical motion design skills, but also deepened my understanding of how design can function as an emotional and experimental language.
This experience represents more than a creative exercise; it reflects my willingness to step into the unknown, learn independently, and transform challenges—whether self-driven or collaborative—into meaningful, expressive design work.
